Andrea Arnold was born on April 5, 1961, in Dartford, UK. She studied directing at the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles. After making several short films, she won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for Wasp in 2005. Her first feature, Red Road, won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and her second feature, Fish Tank, won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2009. Arnold is known for her social realism and her focus on marginalized characters. In 2021, she directed her first documentary, Cow, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Her latest film, Bird, premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
